Textbook: Science 9 – 2013/2014
November 18/13 – Our last day in Earth & Space was today. We focused in on the different types of technology that help us to learn more about our universe. Filled in a table on each of these technologies (handed these in), and watched the Hubble telescope video clip about deep space.
November 14/13 – Today we completed a formal lab called Spying Spectra. We handed this in at the end of class.
November 12/13 – Today started by going over our test results. Then we continued with a reading about distances in space. This was followed by two activities, the students made their own astrolabes and measured a number of classroom objects to find the angle of inclination. This was used in the concept of triangulation. We also looked at the concept of parallax, and did a quick activity that showed us this. The class ended as students completed and handed in an fill in the blank worksheet on triangulation and parallax. This was handed-in or homework if it was not completed in class.
November 7/13 – Test followed by a word search.
November 5/13 – Class began as we looked at a review sheet for our upcoming test. The students worked for 30 minutes on their Poem, Rap, Song projects. We read some text on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, and answered questions on it (TBHI), it was homework, if not completed during class time.
November 1/13 – We started class by making up 5 questions based on our notes and summarized them in 2 sentences. We completed our reading on the life of a star. Answered some questions from the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (was handed in), and began our Poem, Rap, Song project that is due on November 12/13.
October 30/13 -Today’s topic was the life of a Star, the students took notes on the stages of a star’s life, and a reading was handed out. There will be a test next week Tuesday November 5, 2013.
October 28/13 – Class began as the students answered the OA – questions, based on the reading from last class. We then read about the Big Bang Theory (Handout) and completed the video about our Milky Way. Amazing Stuff. The students were reminded about their Horizon Map Activity, and that they should have it completed and handed in.
October 23/13 – Today we looked at the idea the the universe is expanding. We read (from a handout) about Edwin Hubble and his discovery, used a balloon to demonstrate this phenomena, and talked about Red Shift and Blue Shift. Two things were to be completed and handed in: The model of the universe, and the electromagnetic spectrum worksheet.
October 21/13 – The Earth is like a Giant Magnet. Today we explored the force field around a magnet. We completed a lab using compasses and iron filings. This was handed in. We completed this class by watching 20 minutes of a video about our Northern lights.
October 17/13 – Today we read a handout on “Galaxies”. We answered questions # 1-5, 12 on a second handout. A print out of student marks was given. Class completed with a look at the Galaxies via video. Students were given a progress report today.
October 15/13 – We spent the entire class working on our Solar System posters. These were handed in or taken home for homework.
October 10/13 – We began class by reading pages 395-396 (about Kuipers, Asteroid belts and other phenomena). Then we answered questions # 3,6, 11 – 13, 16-17, and 19. These were handed in. We were introduced to the Solar System poster assignment.
October 8/13 – We opened class by reading and discussing the Terrestrial Planets (pages 387 – 388) in the text. Then we watched Bill Nye on the Planets and had a 10 question quiz. We then read about the Gaseous Giants, and discussed their features. Reminder: Quiz ReWrite is Tuesday and Thursday at lunch! DON’T FORGET!
October 4/13 – We opened class by answering the questions on page 385 # 5, 11. then we used a carousel activity to look at our planets. Finally, we watched another part of the video on our Milky Way.
October 2/13 – Today we went over our test results from last class, and set a retest date for next week Tuesday and Thursday, during lunch hour. Then we answered the questions on page 385 # 1-4, in our text. Read and discussed pages 383 – 384, answered questions # 6-9. Both sets of questions were handed in.
September 30/13 – Today we had a mini-test on the vocabulary that we have covered so far. We read pages 381-382 in the text, and finished the class with a video on our Milky Way. How stars are born and how they die.
September 26/13 – Today we answered the following questions on page 380, # 5, 8, 11, 14-16 then we completed our flip books of the lunar phases. These were both handed in. There will be a mini-test next class.
September 24/13 – Today’s topic focused on the relationship between the Sun, Earth and Moon. We looked specifically at the different types of eclipses and when they occur. We are making a flip book, showing the 8 lunar phases.
September 20/13 – Class started with 4 questions that reviewed Earth’s motions. I came around and checked on the horizon maps. Our topic was the tides, and we completed some notes about the tides with regards to the sun, moon, and the earth. We read page 376-7 and discussed the phases of the moon. Quizzed each other on the moon phases and finally answered 4 questions about the phases of the moon. Handouts: Earth’s motions (TBHI). Homework: page 380 #1-4 (if not completed in class), also first record on your horizon map is due at the end of this week.
September 18/13 – Today’s OA was 5 questions about the Seasons. These were handed in. We read through the Northern Circumpolar Constellations handout together as a class. We discussed how to make a horizon map from our backyard and how to plot one constellation on that map. We also looked at the night sky using Starry Nights program from Hope BC. We started to talk about the Earth-Moon system. The Seasons Posters were due this block. Handouts: Northern Circumpolar Constellations. Homework: Draw a horizon map from your backyard.
September 16/13 – We started the class with a short 5 min. video clip about the wandering stars. The topic was Precession, and we discussed the terms on pages 370-371. Then answered and handed in questions #9, 11, 14-16 from page 375. The class ended by working on a poster about the Seasons. Handouts: Season’s Poster assignment. Homework: Questions if not completed in class, and Season’s Poster.
